May 2, 2013 By Joseph Madalon

The attorneys at Madalon Law want you to be aware of the dangers when riding on a bus.

dreamstimefree_6360645.jpgWith at least one person killed and 18 more injured, the April 18th fatal bus accident on the Florida Turnpike is another bus crash to add to the growing number of recent fatal accidents involving a van or bus. Occurring in Osceola County, the driver had lost control when one of the tires had separated and the van then rolled over several times. One of the passengers (a 46 year old woman from North Miami) was thrown from the van and tragically died at the scene. The other 18 injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals.

It seems there are more and more bus accidents in the news. There are school bus accidents, passenger van accidents, transit buses and even commercial buses. What is even more tragic is that these accidents regularly involve severe injuries and/or fatalities.
In just the last couple of months, there have been several bus accidents making the news.

Here are just a few:

• March 17, 2013: The Seton Hill University women’s lacrosse team was traveling across the state of Pennsylvania to play a game near Lancaster, when the charter bus veered off the road and struck a tree. The driver died at the scene and several injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals. The lacrosse team’s coach, Kristina Quigley, who was six months pregnant with a boy, was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Kristina and her unborn child did not survive.

• March, 22,, 2013: In St. Petersburg, Florida, a charter bus carrying the Rochester Community and Technical College baseball team ran a red light and struck a car. The Driver and passenger were both critically injured. Research showed four speeding tickets on the bus driver’s record since 2004.

• April 5, 2013: A school bus in a Chicago suburb is involved in an accident with 2 other vehicles. The school bus overturned in the accident and 23 children were transported to local hospitals. One of the drivers of the other vehicle died at the scene.

• April 11, 2013: In Irving, Texas, a charter bus flips over, traps 40 elderly people inside the bus and shuts down Highway 161 outside of Dallas. There were 2 fatalities.

So why are so many of these accidents happening? There can be so many reasons and factors in a bus accident. It could be a manufacture vehicle defect, driver negligence and so many more things. There are service logs that need to be researched, travel logs and even having the ability to recreate the accident in order to truly pinpoint where the negligence came from to determine who is at fault.
